In 1959, the jazz album “Kind of Blue” was released. Miles Davis (along with John Coltrane, “Cannonball Adderley”, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb) again was leading a new direction in jazz, and the album became the biggest selling jazz album in history.
On September 13, the “Sunday Afternoon Jazz in the Ballroom” series will feature a handpicked group of world-renowned musicians powerful enough to play the entire album live, and do it justice.
Terrel Stafford, based in New York, has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner.
Since the mid-1990’s, Terrel has performed with Benny Golson, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Barron, Jimmy Heath, Jon Faddis, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Alumni Band.
And Terrel has performed on over 130 albums, including Diana Krall’s GRAMMY-nominated “From this Moment On”.
Tom Scott, 13-time Grammy nominee, is one of the world’s most renowned saxophonists, and has performed with a few artists whose names you’ll recognize:

Tamir Hendelman, a favorite pianist of L.A. jazz lovers, at age 14 won the Yamaha National Piano Competition. Singers like Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole and Diana Krall have depended on his taste and sophistication. For years, his virtuosity has lit up The Clayton-Hamilton Band and the Jeff Hamilton Trio.
Mike Gurrola has quickly become an in-demand bassist to musicians on the international jazz-scene, and has worked with premier musicians such as Benny Green, Eric Reed, Mary Stallings, Terry Gibbs, Willie Jones III, and Benny Golson.
Drummer, composer, and bandleader Marcello Carelli has played with Grammy award-winning musicians such as John Daversa, Russ Ferrante, Eric Reed, Tamir Hendelman, John Beasley, Wycliffe Gordon and Shelly Berg.
Tickets are only $50 to attend in person, $15 for the livestream and for students. LAAC members receive a 20% discount.
The concert will be presented in the beautiful Centennial Ballroom at the classic Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown. The parking garage entrance is at 646 South Olive Street 90014. Parking is $10 with validation.
Optional brunch/cocktails are available before the concert, just note on the ticket form whether you want to come for brunch.
We also welcome you to join us after the concert for American Songbook jazz and dinner that night, 6:00 to 8:30, but for that you do need reservations. There is only a $10 cover charge for non-members, and no minimum!
